Choosing an auspicious date
Time is the universal force of movement and change. According to the seasons produce is obtained, according to Time we rise, work, sleep. All the events in our lives are determined by Time. Everything good and bad happens in Time.
Timing is crucial to the success of every single endeavor – from planting crops, to pruning, harvesting, trading in stocks and shares, launching a new product and even asking for a raise or a promotion. Hindus therefore like to harmonize major events in their lives — like marriage, planning a pregnancy, buying a new vehicle or property, moving into a new house etc. — with the forces of Cosmic Time which are indicated by the planets. Calculations of inauspicious and auspicious dates (tithis) and timings (muhurta) are very complex and require a lot of time on the part of the pandit. So there are 3 ways in which to choose a date for your wedding. |
#1. Make an astrological consultation with a reliable astrologer or local pandit (not a well-meaning uncle or auntie in India!!!) in which both your horoscopes will be drawn up. Usually compatibility checks are done - but if you have already decided to get married this is superfluous. Your life periods are then analyzed to find out the best window of opportunity in which both of your charts are in perfect harmony with the forces of Time. If this is difficult then only the chart of the bride is analyzed. This process involves drawing up charts for each day of the year, and then fine tuning the time slot to harmonize with both your astrological energies in order to maximize the good effects of the marriage outcomes.
This window of opportunity may be sooner or later than the date you’d like, and may also be at 2am on the Wednesday morning for example!! In other words it will probably be the most unlikely opportunity which would be highly inconvenient to you, your families and guests. The pandit may take about 2 to 3 hours to calculate the exact time and date. After going through this complex process and finding the date chosen to be inconvenient couples usually revert to #2!
#2. Look in the Hindu almanac or Panchang (here a well-meaning auntie or uncle can be helpful! Or there are numerous on-line sites that offer this service and choose a "generally" auspicious day - a generically good day which is non-specific and is convenient — usually on a weekend. It is important to emphasize that just because a day is “generally” auspicious doesn’t mean that it is specifically good for you upon deeper analysis of your birth chart! If there are no generically auspicious days in the time period you would prefer then eliminate all the inauspicious days such as new-moon days (amavasya) eclipses etc.

#3. Take a chance — choose a day, any day that is convenient to both of you and hope for the best! Rely on your Karma. Let your intuition be your guide and hard work your path!
